That Moment of Take Off

“The gladdest moment in human life is a departure into unknown lands.” – Sir Richard Burton

It’s come to this…finally! After booking my ticket almost a year ago, this afternoon I commence my 26 hour journey to China. Three hours by bus to Sydney, 9 hours by plane to Singapore, a 5 hour stopover with hopefully a shower at Singapore Airlines lounge, then a 5 hour flight to Quanzhou, China.

Oh the delays, obstacles and heavy duty planning of the past-all that research, decision making and then booking of hotels, tours, domestic flights, train tickets .

Yes, I’m doing it my way and not participating in a group tour. Yes, its more costly but then I get to choose where I want to go and so I will include some roads less travelled and have a more personal journey.

There’s something about arriving in new cities, wandering empty streets with no destination. I will never lose the love for the arriving, but I’m born to leave.” Charlotte Eriksson

Soon I’ll be on the bus but when that plane leaves Australian soil I’ll be quoting my favourite Dr Seuss poem and congratulating me, myself and moi for this travel achievement

Today is your day
You’re off to great places
You’re off and away

You’ve got brains in your head
You’ve got feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself any
Direction you choose

You’re on your own
And you know what you know
And you are the guy (mature woman)
Who’ll decide where you go

Out there things can happen
And frequently do
To people as brainy
And footsy as you

And will you succeed?
Yes you will indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed)

You’re off to great places
Today is your day
Your mountain is waiting
Go, get on your way!”
Dr. Suess
