It is always important to know when something has reached its end. Closing circles, shutting doors, finishing chapters, it doesn’t matter what we call it; what matters is to leave in the past those moments in life that are over.” Paulo Coelho The Zahir .
This week is the 14th of July, France’s celebration of its birthday as a modern nation-and what a birth it was ! Bloody, painful, chaotic and yet it helped establish the nation on some of the most important principles of humanity, freedom (liberté ) being onesuch.
You might wonder how freedom could ever be a small thing and yet the larger freedoms are always based on the smaller acts, thoughts, feelings.
The freedom to choose our coffee, friends, music can seem so fundamental as to be trivial and yet in some countries and situations and for some people today, such small acts of personal preference are prohibited. The freedom to change is fundamental to our evolution as a species and yet is frequently seen as capricious particularly by those who have a hard time letting go and try to control life and others .
As I move towards completing my three months journey in France, I’m reflecting on all that Ive learnt, those things that have worked wonderfully and those that have gone pear shaped-which is in fact an inevitable aspect of travel and life. While I finish this chapter, I’m starting to ruminate on my next challenge in Life while giving thanks for the freedom to choose.
