In Celebration of Small Things: An Espresso, Croissant and the occasional Madeleine
It’s been quite a week, so many highs and lows during my first week in Paris. As usual in times of such thrilling discombobulation, it’s the small things which become important and provide restorative comfort as we move through change. Things like espressos, croissants and those gorgeous little French cakes known as Madeleines. When I lived in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, I belonged to a community choir. It was a very social group and we often went out to dinner, had picnics or lunch on a Sunday before choir. For those occasions we all cooked something to bring and share. My speciality was muffins, so much so that my nickname became Kate McMuffin. Blueberry, Apple and Cinnamon, Pumpkin and Sage, Banana, Strawberry, you name it I cooked it. But since becoming more and more interested in health, I’ve tried to cut down if not eliminate my favourite sweet of the past. In the last few years I’ve really become a fan of croissants. These light, sugarless creations are divine-or so I thought in Australia until I tasted the French variety from a local ‘Boulanger Artisan’. Quelle Bonheur! I now have them for breakfast, usually with lunch and also dinner. Coupled with an espresso-a replacement for my habitual cappuccino-and serenity is restored to body, mind and spirit. Add the occasional Madeline, a tiny French cake which is filling but not sweet and I can take on the world.
