It’s the major cultural divide between France and Australia which underpins all other differences. France has an extensive, complex and multi-layered history and been home to millions of souls who have left their marks in so many areas of life. It seems to me that it’s the past which often heavily influences present day decisions in France. It’s rich cultural tapestry is woven into every aspect of the life of its citizenry. By contrast, Australia is one of the worlds youngest nations but even in that country, my homeland, there are distinct and stark contrasts between the past and future. We live in an ancient land, once part of the magnificent Gondwana-a fusion of the present day countries of South America, Australia and Antarctica. We also are home to the oldest continuous culture in the world, our Indigenous culture which has suffered so much through colonisation and it’s consequences. It’s a culture all Australians should be proud of yet many aren’t until they go overseas and start to appreciate it through the eyes of others who understand the importance and value of the past and it’s influence in creating a better future.
